My mom was good at limiting the amount of sugar, fats\u00a0and refined foods that made it into\u00a0our cupboards and frig. I even remember &#8220;the cereal\u00a0rule&#8221;: I was only allowed to eat cereal with less than 9 grams of sugar per serving.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">As an adult I have learned the importance of reading and understanding a nutrition label\u00a0and how to make\u00a0that skill\u00a0(unlike 10th grade geometry) work\u00a0to the benefit of\u00a0me and my family.\u00a0I believe this skill is something\u00a0 we should teach kids\u00a0in grade school\u00a0so they have a firm grasp on what they are putting in their bodies, which can\u00a0help them make better choices\u00a0and hopefully avoid obesity and its related diseases.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">\u00a0The <span><span>FDA&#8217;s<\/span><\/span> web site features a section called <a href=\"http:\/\/www.fda.gov\/Food\/LabelingNutrition\/ConsumerInformation\/ucm078889.htm\" target=\"_blank\">How to Understand and Use the Nutrition Facts Label<\/a>.\u00a0 Below is one of the charts\u00a0on the site.
